In your  child’s reading package you will find tons of useful materials to help you and your child have a successful year of reading in both French and English. You may use the materials as you wish; you are not obligated to use everything. However, it is strongly recommended that you spend at least fifteen minutes a night working with your child. It is suggested that you alternate between French and English; choose one language to practice a day as  it is still hard for them to transition with ease between the two.

In your child’s Reading Package you will find:

Yellow Duotang: This Duotang is a home  for a variety of things

    • Reading Log Sheets:

      • At the front of the duotang there are yellow sheets to track the English A-Z Books ( paper books). When you sit down to read a book, write the title in and  the level of the book ( found on the cover at the top… normally in a grey box). After your first read through decide if  the book was too hard, just right or too easy.  At this time of the year most books will be too hard until we continue to build their reading skills.  This is totally normal. Encourage them to use the pictures to help find the right words and vocabulary.  It will  get easier as the year goes on: we are still beginning readers!

      • There are also blue reading log sheets that we will be using when you start to receive the French A-Z books in Nov/ Dec.

      • There is  a list of both English and French sight word.  The English ones are identical to  the ones that can be found on our class website. The French ones have been changed  slightly from that original list. Please follow the ones on our website. You can also  use the paint chips that will be sent one every week as well. Please let me know if you end up missing some!

      • There is additional information available about writing, printing, paper placement, letter sounds in French and numbers.

2 English A-Z Paper Books

    • These books will be exchanged every week. I will switch the books out and change the levels according to Reading Log Sheets.

1 French Levelled  Reader with Puzzle Pieces

    • These books and puzzle pieces will be exchanged every week. These sets of vocabulary will help your child to be introduced to new vocabulary and build on their current vocabulary. You can play matching  games with the magnets and practice the words.

    • The CD in your package is for you to use for the year ( you will be asked to return this CD in June ). The CD has all the vocabulary/ stories  for you and your child to listen to and follow along.  The book numbers align with the track numbers on the CD.  This is a perfect opportunity to learn with them!  They do not need to memorize or be able to read each word - it is more to have them exposed to a variety of vocabulary in French.

1 Pink Story Book

    • This will be exchanged every few months. This book has additional vocabulary and stories if you are looking for something extra!

1 Tic Tac Toe Game & White Board Marker

    • Use this board to make practicing sounds, letter names, numbers and sight words fun!  Write a word on each spot of the game board and then play tic tac toe. But here is the catch-  to be able to put down your O or X  the player ( yes this means you too… ) needs to say what is written in that box.

1 Package of Wiki Stix

    • Use these fun, bendable and twistable stix to make and practice creating words, letters and numbers

Jolly Phonics

    • Every week you will be receiving a set of sheets with the week’s new French letters/ sounds.  We practice these  in class throughout the week. You can add them to your dark blue duotang.

    • You will also be receiving the corresponding letters/ sounds game pieces each week.  Cut these out and play a matching game to further help them recognize letters and associate the appropriate sounds.

1 Witch’s Finger

    • Use this to keep reading fun!  You can use this as a tracking finger for reading or  for pointing… something special for reading time.

Please return reading packages to school every Monday so that books may be exchanged based on your child’s progress. Please ensure the package is returned with all the pieces accounted for. Thank you for your support in advance!
