Welcome to the wonderful world of Grade One!  It will be an exciting year as we have many things to explore and to learn about.  As we work our way through the Alberta Grade 1 curriculum we will also be developing 21st Century competencies as laid out by Alberta Education.  Together we will grow into engaged thinkers, ethical citizens and develop our entrepreneurial spirits.
 RELIGION

The students will learn about themselves, their families and friends.  They will share their feelings and exchange ideas.  They will learn more about God our Father, a friend, a protector, a helper and someone who loves and cares for them. Students will learn songs of praise and thankfulness to God. They will learn the Our Father and the Hail Mary.

FRENCH LANGUAGE ARTS

There are four components to this program: learning to listen with understanding,

speaking, reading, and writing in French.  We will use language experiences as a

basis for developing vocabulary, sounds, sentence structures and personal

expression of ideas. Our Home Reading Program will be in place to encourage

your child to read every day.

 ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

The focus of this year’s program will be on communication as well as reading and

writing skills.  As the English Language Arts program is only one half hour per day

we strongly recommend parents continue to read with your child every day. We will

be sending home leveled readers in the Home Reading package once a week.

Please supplement these books with other reading materials.  We encourage

you to visit the Calgary Public Library on a regular basis.

ART

The Art program will provide an opportunity for your child to develop their fine skills though lines, shapes, colours and textures while exploring various techniques. Our activities will generally be related to our French Language Art themes.

MUSIC

The Music program will provide an opportunity for your child to explore and describe the sounds around them, noting whether those sounds are high or low. They will echo rhythms and express their feelings by using action songs, singing games and rhythm.
