Here are a few tidbits to help you understand what will be happening this year in our class and Ecole Holy Name:
The fundamental rule underlying all rules in the school is respect. You can find a breakdown of the code of conduct and the discipline policy in the agenda. It is very important that you read over this information with your child. The classroom rules will be implemented as needed with students, if there is a concern aboutbehaviour you will be notified in the agenda, email or phone. There is a zero tolerance policy towards bullying.
Curriculum and Assessment
You will find the Grade 1 Alberta Curriculum and Assessment strategies that we will be following this year in the tabs. These will serve as our guide this year.
Agendas
Your child received an agenda from the school; this is a very important communication tool. This is how you will be notified about field trips and receive important forms and information. The agenda must be checked daily and returned signed the next day. Furthermore, if your child takes the bus- Please write BUS or NO BUS if your child takes the bus. There are many students who switch how they get home depending on various circumstances. There are too many students to keep track of all the changes, a message in the agenda is the best way to ensure your child confirms with me how they are getting home. We need a message in the agenda if someone other than a parent is picking your child up from school.
"Homework"
The only “homework” this year will be based around reading.
Please check back here in the This Week..., Mes Mots, Sight Words and Themed vocabulary tabs every week as these are where all words of the week, class information, and school information will be posted.
We will also be implementing a home reading program that will be exchanged every Wednesday. This will include a French book, and an English book. There will be a Reading Information Night to help explain the reading process we will be using and show you what we will be sending home. If you ever have any questions, please let me know!
Water bottles
We encourage the students to bring a water bottle to keep on their desk. As you can imagine, things get knocked over quite a bit in Grade 1!
Please be sure that the container you send is spill proof. If it is open, and knocked over, it should not spill. The pop top or “push to drink” models work best in the classroom. Please do not send screw top bottles, when they are open they spill quite a bit.
Clothing
Please read the guidelines in the agenda in regards to clothing.
We ask that you label your child’s coats, mitts, scarves, boots, umbrella, tuques, and hats. Please make sure your child remembers to dress for the weather. Little fingers and ears get cold very easily!
Snack/ Lunch
We will be discussing nutrition and healthy choices throughout the year. Please try to send healthy snacks and lunches to school as we will be talking about the different food groups. (The “sugar group” is discussed as the special occasion/dessert group.) We remind our students to save their treat for after they eat their lunch. We will be stressing the importance of eating healthily.
We are lucky at Holy Name to have a canteen. If you would like your child to order a
pie for lunch (Simple Simon Pies $3.00 ) please write us a note in the agenda, as
sometimes our Grade 1 students forget that they are supposed to order something
for lunch. There are also small snacks available at the canteen for purchase.
Birthdays
We love to celebrate Birthdays! If your child is wanting to celerbate their birthday with
the class at school please ONLY send healthy snacks ( veggies, fruit, cheese, crackers,
etc...). Cupcakes, sweets and cake will be sent back home if they are sent in. Please help
us promote healthy nutrition and choices in our school and classroom. If you have any
questions please let me know and we can figure something out.

Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you"
(Matthew 7:7)
